NNEA PAC has proudly endorsed pro-schools, pro-labor candidates for Newport News Mayor, City Council, and School Board, based on their voting records, questionnaire responses, and interviews. Congratulations to Mayor Phillip Jones, Councilman Cleon Long, Councilman John Eley, and School Board members Gary Hunter, Lisa Surles-Law, and Dr. Terri Best.
In addition, NNEA PAC endorses a “YES” vote on the 1% sales tax for school construction referendum, which would provide desperately needed funding exclusively for the city’s aging school buildings, which are hundreds of millions of dollars behind in deferred construction and maintenance, leading to faulty HVAC and plumbing, roof leaks, and flimsy “learning cottage” trailers across the district. If passed, the 1% sales tax would not apply to essentials such as groceries, gas, medicine, diapers, hygiene products, or vehicle sales.
