After years of advocacy from the NNEA and other local public sector unions, Newport News City Council voted 7-0 on Tuesday evening in favor of public sector collective bargaining (the right to negotiate for fair contracts) for city workers such as firefighters, police officers, public works employees, and more.

A huge thank you to pro-labor Mayor Phil Jones for putting collective bargaining on the Council meeting agenda. A huge thank you as well to Councilman Cleon Long, who chaired the city’s collective bargaining task force and who worked diligently with local union leaders to make amendments to the proposed ordinance in order to make this a fair and just ordinance that Newport News public servants deserve! And many thanks to Newport News City Council members for unanimously supporting public employees’ right to negotiate for fair contracts.
Next up is the Newport News School Board meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 18, at the NNPS Admin Building at 6:30 pm. Please join the NNEA there in #Red4Ed. Newport News city workers have won collective bargaining rights and will have a seat at the table to negotiate for better working conditions, pay, and benefits. Newport News school employees deserve the same….
