Dear NNEA Members,
I am writing to express my deep disappointment with the NNPS leadership regarding the upcoming election day on April 21, 2026. Despite our best efforts to advocate for remote learning and an e-commute day for all employees, the administration has declined to adjust their position.
We presented several key points and member concerns to leadership, including:
- Conflicting Communications: On March 16th, an initial email indicated asynchronous learning for students without requiring staff to be in person. Minutes later, a second email was sent stating that teachers must report to work. We pointed out this contradiction and urged the leadership to honor the original guidance.
- Childcare Challenges: We highlighted that requiring in-person attendance forces teachers with young children to find immediate childcare or take a leave of absence.
- Precedent for E-Commute Days: We noted that previous state elections have been designated as e-commute days, allowing teachers to work from home while remaining available to students via Zoom and email. We questioned why this same standard is not being applied now.
While we believe our arguments were valid and transparent, the administration has chosen not to change its decision. As your NNEA President, I want to emphasize that we advocated strongly on your behalf, but we cannot force a change in their directive.
Ultimately, your family comes first. I encourage all members to do whatever is necessary to take care of your personal and family obligations on April 21st.
Thank you for your continued support and for sharing your concerns with us.
